The Brandenburg City Council worked through discussions related to traffic during their regular meeting Monday (7/8) night.
The council reviewed and approved a change of addressing for two residences along Howard Drive. The request came the Meade County Addressing Office to clear up confusion at 16 and 17 Howard Drive by changing their street assignment to Pike Lane. After some discussion the city will move the street name sign to the corner to make the transition as a natural intersection instead of name change several feet past the intersection. Some council members expressed concern related to a major jump in house numbers along the area, but then decided to see how this change works before reviewing further adjustments. During the discussion, it was mentioned that some residents across the entire city do not have their house numbers posted on the house or along the street to assist navigation along city streets.
During the departmental reports, Police Chief Brian Hagg provided a proposed traffic flow plan for the school campus which includes Brandenburg Primary, David T Wilson and Stuart Pepper Middle School. The plan calls for use of a new entrance from Broadway Street into the campus and a major exit route to shift traffic onto Howard Drive. After review of the drawings of the plan, the city council voice major concern about placing heavy traffic into the neighboring residential area along Howard Drive. Chief Hagg said that he provided several concerns with school officials regarding the traffic plan. The Board of Education is expected to discuss the plan at their regular monthly meeting Tuesday (7/9) at 7:30 pm.
In other business, the council congratulated Gorby and Anne Wright as the recipients of the July “Yard of Month” award. Council members approved a resolution to enter into a interlocal agreement with the Meade County Fiscal Court to purchase a metal roof for the new amphitheater roof structure. The agreement calls for the city to provide forty percent of the cost of the project which total about $4,000 annually for the next three years.
Police Chief Brian Hagg reported to the council his officers are now using the mobile data terminal in their patrol vehicles. He said that productivity has already increased and the technology will allow better officer safety in the field.
David Pace, Chairman of the Meade County Industrial Authority, provided city leaders with an update on the Nucor project. He said that work is being done to complete several environmental and archaeological studies on the site to ensure everything is order as the six month option on property begins to near the end. He said that several acres of the site has disced up to allow teams of several agencies to walk various parts of the site to complete the due diligence investigation to complete the survey work. He also said that meetings are ongoing to figure out the best options to meet capacity needs of the city’s sewer plant. Local leaders are still working with various ides to determine what is the best investment and use for all parties.
Pace said if all of the details finalize within the several weeks, dirt on the project could turn as early as August to begin the construction process.
The next scheduled meeting of the Brandenburg City Council will be held on Monday, August 12 at 7 pm at Brandenburg City Hall.
