
Kentucky State Police Post 16 at Henderson are investigating a shooting involving a Daviess County Sheriff’s deputy and a burglary suspect.
The preliminary investigation reveals Daviess County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 9000 block of US 60 west in Owensboro regarding a man with a hammer breaking into homes around 11 a.m. Friday.
Deputy Alex Cooms, 31 of Owensboro, was in the area when he observed a frantic woman and a juvenile running from a house. The woman told Cooms they escaped after being assaulted by a man with a hammer inside their home. Cooms went inside where he confronted 39 year-old Gregory A. Embry, of Owensboro, who was armed with a hammer. Embry attempted to attack Cooms with the hammer when he discharged his service weapon striking Embry.
Embry was taken to Owensboro Health and is listed in critical condition. Deputy Cooms was not injured.
Criminal charges are pending.
