The Sherman Minton Bridge is now closed to traffic in both directions until further notice.
The Sherman Minton Renewal Project announced the total closure of the bridge in a social media post made at 1:20 p.m. Friday.
According to the project’s website, the closure was ordered after a component of the bridge deck on the main span was found to need immediate inspection and possible repair before traffic can be permitted to cross the bridge.
Project officials say the problem was found during scheduled deck pour operations.
The Sherman Minton Bridge, which opened in 1962, carries Interstate 64 traffic between Louisville and Floyd County, Indiana.
