Kentucky State Police arrested two people from Russell County on Saturday on the charge of child abuse.
Emily McKinney, 27, and Joe Johnson, 30, were arrested after an investigation found that their dog had attacked and left McKinney’s child hospitalized with serious injuries.
Kentucky State Police reports that on March 12, McKinney’s 10-month-old child was taken to the Russell County Hospital and transported to the University of Kentucky Hospital by helicopter, for treatment of serious injuries. This was reportedly due to an attack by an unknown stray dog.
Russell County first responders had responded to the area and attempted to locate the dog but were unsuccessful.
Three days later, Kentucky State Police spoke with McKinney and her boyfriend Johnson and determined the dog that attacked the child was not a stray. It belonged to the couple. Police reports that Johnson had concealed the location of their dog after the incident, causing local first responders to use resources to search for a stray dog “that did not exist.”
McKinney and Johnson are facing multiple charges, including child abuse, tampering with physical evidence and lying to police.
They are both being held in the Russell County Detention Center with a $10,000 cash bond.
