A Bowling Green woman was arrested in Edmonson County on Friday after nearly hitting a deputy head on while driving.
Ponda Bennett, 48, was charged with first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance, buying or possessing drug paraphernalia, first-degree and second-degree fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, second-degree wanton endangerment, tampering with physical evidence and reckless driving.
Police reported that Bennett was driving north on Wingfield Church Road in the middle of the road and almost hit a deputy’s car head on.
Police said Bennett then accelerated at a high rate of speed when the deputy turned on his lights and sirens.
Bennett was eventually found after she lost control of the vehicle and hit a mailbox and stopped in a driveway.
Police said Bennett was out of the vehicle and refusing basic commands and attempted to flee away from the vehicle.
Bennett was taken into custody and a large amount of methamphetamine, scales and drug paraphernalia was discovered on her and in her vehicle.
Police also said that she had removed another significant amount of methamphetamine from herself and attempted to destroy it inside the cage area of the deputy’s cruiser.
She was taken to the Hart County Jail.
