On April 9, Sheriff Norman Chaffins from the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a citizen advising that a “wanted person” driving a white Jeep was removing items from a storage building next to a business on west US 62 in Leitchfield.
When he arrived, he noticed a white Jeep Cherokee with the motor running and a white male walking to it outside of the building.
Sheriff Chaffins asked the suspect’s name as he kept reaching into the back of the SUV. The suspect was then moved away from the SUV and asked to provide identification.
Chaffins asked for the suspect’s name and he replied that he was Shane Melton and provided him with an Indiana ID card. Additional units arrived after Chaffins ordered three more suspects to exit the building.
It was discovered that 52-year-old Melton had warrants out of Grayson, Hart, and Larue Counties in Kentucky as well as an extradition warrant out of Indiana. He was also found to have a handgun as well as methamphetamine by another officer.
An arrest was also made on one of the other suspects who exited the building. William Sandlin, 47 of Leitchfield, was wanted by police after a crash Chaffins worked on Claggett Road on April 1.
The warrants for Sandlin were for leaving the scene of an accident, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, operating on a suspended operator’s license, and Failure of non-owner to maintain vehicle insurance.
Melton was served the warrants and additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance first offense (Meth) (enhanced by having a handgun) and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
Both suspects were lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
