A man died during surgery after shooting himself during a foot pursuit on Tuesday, according to Louisville Metro Police.
Sgt. Matt Sanders, a spokesperson for LMPD, said officers tried to stop a vehicle in the 4300 block of Sunset Avenue just before 5:30 p.m. in the city’s Chickasaw neighborhood. That is off Hale Avenue, not far from Flaget Field Park.
That is when “the occupant” of the vehicle got out and fled the scene on foot, heading north through neighboring houses and onto Kaiser Court.
At one point during the pursuit, police said the man got a handgun and shot himself. Sanders said officers began rendering aid and called for EMS to transport the man to University Hospital where he later died during surgery.
Police said at no point did a Louisville Metro Police officer fire their weapon.
LMPD’s Public Integrity Unit is investigating the incident.
Police are asking anyone with information, including video, to call the department’s anonymous Crime Tip Line at 502-574-LMPD (5673). Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the department’s Crime Tip Portal.
