A 16-year-old boy was hospitalized after being shot in the head in what police are calling an unintentional act.
Joseph Sharon Hampton Roberts, 20 of Elizabethtown, is accused in the shooting, but isn’t immediately being charged in the incident.
Police were called at 9:34 p.m. Saturday to respond to the 600 block of Stewart Street in Ashley Pointe Apartments, according to Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman Chris Denham.
The investigation into the shooting determined several people were pointing guns at one another and at cameras acting in what Denham called an “extremely reckless” manner.
Denham said Hampton Roberts reported he believed he had an unloaded firearm as he had removed the clip, but when he pulled the trigger, the chamber round fired striking the teen in the head as he sat in a car.
The teen, who was air lifted to a Louisville hospital, was critical with non-life threatening injuries, Denham said.
Hampton Roberts was out of custody on a felony diversion for a previous criminal matter and was charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
He is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.
Bond is not yet set in the matter.
Upon completion of investigation, Denham said the matter in its entirety will be presented to a Hardin County grand jury.
