All three westbound lanes from Louisville to New Albany on the Sherman Minton Bridge are now open.
Workers removed barrels and concrete barriers from the top deck within the last week, and the lanes are expected to remain open through Kentucky Derby weekend. However, crews will still close one or two westbound lanes each weeknight for the next several months to finish cable work on the bridge.
The Interstate 64 eastbound lanes from New Albany to Louisville are scheduled to close around 3 p.m. May 6 and remain closed through 5 a.m. May 20.
The closure will allow crews to finish concrete work on the lower bridge approaches.
Through traffic that bypasses Interstate 265 will be unable to cross the bridge. Drivers will need to exit onto West 5th Street in New Albany and use the surface streets to access I-64 westbound, then continue to I-265 and the alternate route.
The work is part of the ongoing Sherman Minton Renewal Project, which involves painting and rehabilitating the 61-year-old bridge. The project is anticipated to give the six-lane, double-decked bridge up to 30 more years of life.
