The Louisville Metro Police Department has released the identity of a Louisville Metro Police detective who shot a 17-year-old wanted in connection with a recent homicide earlier this week.
The officer has been identified as Detective Benjamin Derby. He has been on the force since February 2020 and is currently assigned to the department’s Criminal Interdiction Division (CID).
According to documents released by the Louisville Metro Police Department on Friday, Derby has received numerous commendations, along with one oral reprimand for a traffic crash, and four letters of reprimand for minor traffic violations.
Derby shot the 17-year-old person of interest around 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, after he pulled a gun and ran from detectives conducting surveillance in the area of South Third Street and West Kenton Street in the Wilder Park neighborhood.
When Derby and other officers approached the 17-year-old, LMPD Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said he displayed the gun and began to run away. Detectives were able to tackle him and began to wrestle for the firearm in the suspect’s hands.
Gwinn-Villaroel said after multiple requests to release the gun, the suspect discharged the firearm and at which point one of the officers returned fire, striking the suspect one time.
The teen was taken to UofL Hospital for treatment, where he was listed in critical condition. There has been no update on his status or injuries.
LMPD arrested a second suspect, 19-year-old Julian Oyaro, on drug charges after the shooting. Oyaro is charged with trafficking fentanyl and heroin, tampering with evidence, fleeing from police, and possession of marijuana.
Body camera footage of the shooting could be released sometime next week.
