A 2-year-old girl found unresponsive in a small body of water in Logan County on Wednesday has died.
She went missing after reportedly wandering away from a home in Logan County on Wednesday morning.
The Logan County Sheriff’s Department reported authorities were dispatched at 11:11 a.m. to the area of Pleasant Drive to investigate the missing child. Sheriff Stephen Stratton shared that deputies were on the scene within six minutes with additional units following closely after.
Stratton said deputies along with other first responders believed the girl had wandered into a nearby cornfield, which is where their search was concentrated.
The search intensified with the help of community members, Logan County Search and Rescue and Emergency management. Investigators discovered the girl unresponsive in a small body of water. Stratton said the girl was located roughly six doors down from where she had been spotted on a neighborhood Ring doorbell camera.
The sheriff’s office said the toddler was immediately rushed to Med Center Health in Russellville. Medical staff stabilized the child before she was flown to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in critical condition. The child died Wednesday evening.
Stratton could not share how long the search took place before the girl was found, though those details may be released throughout the investigation.
Logan County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identities of those involved in the investigation.
Child Protective Services is working alongside the sheriff’s office to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
