A game of chicken turned deadly Thursday evening when a man was struck by a pickup truck in a Cecilia yard.
Jose Wilmer Villalobos, 33, of Cecilia, is charged with reckless homicide in the incident that killed 24 year-old Abraham Hernandez Valancia.
Hardin County Sheriff’s Office units responded around 7 p.m. to a residence on Carriewood Drive in Cecilia in reference to a pedestrian being struck in the yard, according to Chief Deputy David Lee.
According to Villalobos’s arrest citation, Hernandez Valancia and a friend were drinking after work under a tree in the yard before the incident. When Villalobos arrived at the residence after work, he drove toward the tree and failed to hit the brakes, pinning Hernandez Valancia between the truck and the tree.
Sheriff’s deputies report Villalobos fled the scene following the incident, but returned and was read his Miranda rights in Spanish. Hernandez Valancia was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hardin County Coroner’s Office.
Villalobos was detained and charged without incident.
Reckless homicide is a Class D felony, which is punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.
Villalobos is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center in lieu of a $250,000 bond.
The investigation continues by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division.
The sheriff’s office also was assisted at the scene by Hardin County EMS.
