Kentucky State Police has confirmed human remains discovered last November belong to Katie Mae Cawthorn, a Monroe County woman who went missing on October 1, 2019.
Cawthorn was last seen in the Bugtussle community, located just north of the Kentucky-Tennessee state line.
Public Affairs Officer for Kentucky State Police Post 15 Jonathan Houk confirmed on Thursday that the remains found along Blankenship Road in Monroe County have been positively identified as Cawthorn’s.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Lucas Geralds previously said a human skull was found about 200 yards from Cawthorn’s residence on November 8, 2023.
The investigation, initially treated as a missing person’s case, has shifted to a death investigation following the identification of Cawthorn’s remains, according to the Kentucky State Police.
Police have indicated the cause and date of death remains undetermined at this stage, and there are currently no suspects under investigation.
