Louisville-based health insurance company Humana has reached a $90 million settlement with the federal government after a whistleblower lawsuit, according to a release from Phillips & Cohen LLP.
Attorneys said the whistleblower, who filed the lawsuit in 2016, is a former actuary for Humana. It claims that between 2011 and 2017, Humana submitted fraudulent bids to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for lucrative drug contracts, significantly overcharging the government.
The lawsuit claims Humana took advantage of the Medicare Part D program and took tens of millions of dollars more than Congress intended for years, pocketing leftover money as savings.
