At least two people are dead after a triple shooting near the Elizabethtown courthouse Monday morning.
Chris Denham with Elizabethtown Police Department said calls came in reporting the shooting happened around 9 a.m. in the parking lot across from the Hardin Judicial Center in the 100 block of East Dixie Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found two women and a male shot. One of the women died at the scene. She was identified as 37-year-old Erica Riley of Elizabethtown. The other woman shot was Riley’s mother, 71-year-old Janet Riley of Hardinsburg. Janet was taken to the hospital in critical condition, but later died.
During an update Monday afternoon, Chief Jeremy Thompson said this was a targeted shooting, and that Erica was dating the suspect, identified as 46 year-old Christopher Elder, of Elizabethtown. Thompson said the other two victims were family members of Erica.
Thompson said Elder fled the scene before Elizabethtown Police arrived, leading to a cross-county police pursuit, which ended in a standoff with officers in Christian County in western Kentucky.
Denham said during the standoff, Elder shot himself. He was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
Hardin County court records indicate the suspect and Erica were scheduled for a hearing on an emergency protective order (EPO) Erica had filed against him.
