Crews were called to the Veterans Memorial Parkway and Ironworks Road intersection around 6:45 a.m. Tuesday after a Clark County school bus struck and killed a pedestrian, according to the Clark County Coroner.
Clark County Public Schools says the victim, 15-year-old McKenna Letcher of Winchester, was a George Rogers Clark High School student.
The coroner said Letcher was trying to cross Veterans Memorial Parkway when she was hit by the bus.
The bus was full of other students on their way to school when the incident happened.
Clark County Superintendent Dustin Howard says grief staff will be available district-wide for as long as needed.
Dr. Katherine Stone, a child psychologist, encourages families to take advantage of these resources and watch for signs their children might need further help to work through their grief.
Dr. Stone said if your child starts to have nightmares, if they are avoidant of doing things, if they see an increase in separation anxiety, then that is when you know you need to talk to the school counselor or your pediatrician.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office is investigating what led to this crash.
