Louisville Metro police say they have arrested a man seen burglarizing storage units in disguise.
According to arrest documents, 42 year-old James Michael Dewitt Jr. was arrested Tuesday afternoon and is now facing 10 different charges, including eight felonies.
Dewitt has been connected to at least three separate burglaries at storage units in the 6th and 7th division, with losses estimated to be in the hundreds of thousands. In each case, police say Dewitt wore a black wig and was seen driving a stolen U-Haul van.
Police used surveillance footage from the businesses to connect Dewitt to the thefts, along with two other suspects, also in disguise. One of the other two suspects, 47-year-old Jesse Carney Jr., was arrested last month.
The woman seen in the surveillance photos has not been found.
Arrest documents say Dewitt was arrested after officers spotted him at the Kroger gas station on Shepherdsville Road, near West Buechel. Dewitt allegedly ran and hid in a nearby homeowner’s shed, before police got him out and transported him to Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
Police also recovered the stolen U-Haul van Dewitt was allegedly seen in. Inside, they found a gun, drugs and the disguise that Dewitt was seen wearing.
The documents say Dewitt is also accused of stealing copper wire from a location on Les Way Court, causing damage over $1,000. According to police, Dewitt is a nine-time convicted felon.
If you have seen Dewitt’s female accomplice, you are asked to call police at their anonymous tipline, 574-LMPD.
