A man seen jumping on an officer’s marked patrol car early Sunday (09/01) morning as vehicles blocked all lanes of traffic on New Cut Road to spin donuts and burnouts at the intersection was arrested Friday (09/06).
Gualbar Leonel Zerqura Castro, 24, is charged with criminal mischief and rioting, both felonies.
“Castro was captured on body-cam and surveillance footage jumping on a police car causing felony damage to the cruiser the taxpayers pay for,” LMPD said in a social media post. “After our release of the body-cam pictures to the media, the tips came rolling in, quickly identifying this suspect. It’s clear to us that the community will not tolerate this behavior.”
Traffic was brought to a halt as one car after another blocked a south Louisville intersection doing donuts and burnouts. It was one of the latest scenes in an ongoing trend on the city’s streets.
LMPD Interim Chief Paul Humphrey said there was a high potential on Saturday night for someone to be seriously injured but fortunately, that did not what happened. He went on to say the police are not going to tolerate that type of behavior.
Humphrey said while some people may think they have gotten away with this kind of activity, that is not the case. He said police are combing through video and the law allows them for up to a year to identify participants in that and still go and seize their vehicles. More arrests are expected as the investigation continues.
