The Bullitt County mother accused of shooting and killing her two young sons is now claiming she was insane when it happened.
The new insanity argument comes up in a new court filing just received by Bullitt Circuit Court. The filing, which is only two pages long, says very simply that Tiffanie Lucas intends to assert a defense of insanity.
The document says her defense team intends to argue that some mental disease, defect, or other condition caused her to act in the way she did and led to her shooting and killing her two young sons – 9 year-old Jayden Howard and 6 year-old Maurice Baker, Jr.
Typically, this would mean Lucas will now be psychologically evaluated to determine if she could have been out of her right mind when this crime happened and if she is mentally competent to stand trial. The judge would then take that report and determine the best path forward.
But if this insanity defense holds up in court it is possible that Lucas could avoid prison time and instead be institutionalized or undergo court ordered treatment.
