
Kentucky State Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that left both the suspect and a sheriff’s deputy dead.
The shooting happened on September 16 in Russell County around 5:27 p.m. Kentucky State Police and the Russell County Sheriff’s Office were conducting an investigation on Bluebird Drive in Russell Springs when the shooting occurred.
Russell County Sheriff Derek Polston said Phipps was shot while trying to find a suspect who ran away.
Kentucky State Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died. Russell County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Phipps, a 3-year veteran of the agency, was also killed.
Phipps was a former officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department. Louisville Metro Police Department said he began working with the department on June 22, 2020, and later resigned on May 6, 2021 for personal reasons.
Kentucky State Police detectives are currently investigating the officer-involved shooting.
