Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College announced on Friday that they were awarded a grant designed to help improve academic outcomes for first-generation students and those who come from low-income backgrounds.
The U.S. Department of Education awarded the Title 3 Strengthening Institutions Program Grant. It will provide $2 million in funding over the next five years to SKYCTC.
Dr. T. Chris George, the director of TRIO Programs, said the grant was initially applied for in the Spring of 2023 and took 18 months to receive approval.
According to officials, first-generation students and those facing income issues have a lot of barriers such as retention and graduation. They are hoping the grant will help alleviate those barriers.
According to SKYCTC, the key initiatives supported by the grant include expanding programming to help students stay on track for graduation, and career success and providing services to educate students on financial literacy.
