A 22-year-old Louisville man was arrested near a shooting incident that took place Sunday night at Pleasure Ridge Park High School.
According to an arrest citation, multiple witnesses told police at the game that the suspect, Damon Jerome Williams Jr., was seen throwing two guns over the fence behind the visitor’s bleachers.
A Jefferson County Public School Police officer was able to locate Williams and detained him. A spokesperson for Jefferson County Public Schools said Monday Williams is not connected to the shooting in the Pleasure Ridge Park parking lot during the game that injured two people.
The citation said Williams admitted on bodycam video to throwing the guns over the fence for him and his cousin, saying the two needed protection because they are from Victor Park neighborhood and people don’t like them.
Williams has been charged with two counts of possession of a firearm on school property and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
The shooting, which left two juveniles injured, happened during Sunday’s make-up game between Pleasure Ridge Park High School and Male High School. It had been rescheduled after Friday’s game was postponed due to weather.
One of the juvenile male victims was found with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
The other victim arrived at the University of Louisville’s Mary and Elizabeth Hospital with gunshot wounds. They are expected to survive their injuries, Louisville Metro Police Department said Sunday night.
LMPD’s Homicide Unit is handling the investigation due to one of the victim’s serious injuries.
Fans were moved under the stands while players were quickly escorted to the locker room for safety. Game play was suspended, and people were ordered to leave the premises.
Investigators said they are pursuing leads but are asking residents to check their home video systems for any suspicious persons.
Louisville Metro Police said they had good reason to believe those involved fled the area through residential neighborhoods near Pleasure Ridge Park.
