Murder charges were filed against the driver of a pickup truck after a crash with a motorcycle killed a man and woman Friday night in Henry County, Kentucky.
Kentucky State Police said in a news release Monday the crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. on La Grange Road near Dawkins Lane. Investigators believe a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck crossed the center line and hit a motorcycle.
When police arrived, they found the driver of the motorcycle, 40 year-old Austin Doane of Smithfield, dead at the scene. Passenger, 31 year-old Holly Hawkins of New Castle, died at UofL Health – University Hospital in downtown Louisville.
Kentucky State Police said 21 year-old Trustin Hasenauer, of Pendleton, Kentucky, was driving the pickup. Court records show witnesses saw the driver of the pickup run from the scene. Hasenauer was arrested about an hour later at his home after calling the owner of the truck to tell him about the crash.
The arrest citation said a Kentucky State Police trooper went to the address and Hasenauer admitted to being in a collision, but he thought he hit a deer. Asked if he had been drinking, Hasenauer answered “one beer.”
The trooper said Hasenauer failed a field sobriety test and a breathalyzer test showed a .171. He was taken into custody, Mirandized and taken to the hospital for a blood alcohol test.
Police said Hasenauer told them he left the scene because he was scared and his license was expired.
Hasenauer was arraigned in Henry County District Court Monday and pleaded not guilty to murder, operating a vehicle under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to render aid, reckless driving, driving with an expired license and failure to produce an insurance card.
The judge raised Hasenauer’s bond from $500,000 to $750,000. He is scheduled in court again October 14.
He is being held at the Oldham County Detention Center.
