
An internal investigation is underway after a 53-year-old woman died while in the custody of the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections Wednesday afternoon, according to a release.
Officials said officers found the woman unresponsive and in medical distress around 4:30 p.m.
Officers and medical staff began life-saving measures until EMS could arrive. According to the release, EMS was unable to revive the woman, pronouncing her dead at 5:30 p.m.
The Metro Corrections Professional Standards Unit began an internal investigation, as standard procedure. The Louisville Metro Police Public Integrity Unit also began an investigation, according to officials.
Mental health services were made available to others in custody who may have been impacted by this death and the Metro Corrections Peer Support Team has been activated for all staff.
Officials said more details will be released after the coroner’s office notifies next of kin.
