The man accused of killing a Scott County, Kentucky, deputy is set to go on trial early next year in Shelby County.
Last May, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office said 35 year-old Deputy Caleb Conley executed a traffic stop of a vehicle. Conley was shot during the stop and the suspect took off. Kentucky State Police said Conley died at the hospital.
Steven Sheangshang was later indicted for the murder, charged with murder of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, burglary, theft of an automobile, wanton endangerment and fleeing/evading police. He also faces assault and robbery charges in Fayette County for a shooting that happened Monday at Rose and Jim’s on Georgetown Road in Lexington.
Police said after Sheangshang was arrested for Conley’s murder and as his mugshot circulated, Sheangshang was identified on security video as the man who broke into a Kenton County home.
The judge recommended Sheangshang’s trail be held in Shelby County, saying it was a largely rural county outside a metropolitan area, similar to Scott County.
The trial is scheduled to start on February 24, 2025.
