According to a social media post made by the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were sent to a residence in Cox’s Creek around 12:15 p.m. on Christmas Day for a welfare check.
When they arrived, authorities said a confrontation occurred between deputies and the suspect.
During the confrontation, they said the suspect brandished a handgun and shots were fired, hitting him. Deputies then rendered first aid to the suspect.
It is unclear who shot first.
Ramon Pineiroa, the public information officer at the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, said he will be taken to the Nelson County Jail after being released from the hospital.
He said the sheriff’s office will be handling the criminal case against the suspect, and Kentucky State Police will investigate the deputy shooting.
