Indiana State Police are investigating after a Kentucky man died while he was in the custody of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Department.
Harrison County said this happened December 21 around 1:15 p.m. when homeowners called police to report a suspicious vehicle parked on their property.
Deputies found 43-year-old Jeffrey Ruple from Hodgenville, Kentucky in the car. He appeared to be intoxicated.
Ruple wasn’t violent, and he told deputies that he had used meth hours earlier and thought he was in Louisville. Deputies found drugs and other paraphernalia in his car, so they took him to the Harrison County Jail.
Soon after he got there, jail staff refused to take him unless he was taken to the hospital. But as deputies were putting him back into the cruiser, he became unresponsive and later died at the hospital.
The entire interaction was captured on body camera video, which Indiana State Police are now reviewing.
They are just still waiting on an autopsy at this point to find out how Ruple died.
