If you will be ringing in the new year away from home, police say it is time to start planning how you will make it back home safely.
This is especially true if your New Year’s Eve celebrations include alcohol. According to the National Safety Council, alcohol-related accidents account for more than 40% of fatal accidents during the New Year’s Eve period.
Officials encourage people to use a rideshare service, like Uber or Lyft, if you know you will be drinking on New Year’s Eve.
The police will be out in full force.
Officials also reminds people to always be with a buddy and serve yourself when possible while at the New Year’s Eve party and never leave your drink unattended.
“Make sure you don’t consume anything that someone brings you. Make sure you open the drink yourself, make sure you pour the drink yourself. Never leave your drink unattended,” Richardson said.
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day can also be particularly dangerous for pedestrians. Choosing to walk home might sound safe, but it is not. It is better to just plan ahead and have someone there to pick you up or if you are going to be at a friend’s house to stay there if you have been drinking.
