The suspect in the shooting of a southern Indiana deputy was shot and killed by police in Louisville on Saturday night, according to Indiana State Police.
Indiana State Police said 33 year-old Austin Schepers shot Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Zach Andry during a traffic stop on Highway 150 near West Baden on Friday at 12:30 a.m.
Police were searching for Schepers ever since the shooting happened. He was believed to be in New Albany or the greater Louisville area.
Police located Schepers in the 3700 block of Wheeler Avenue, near Interstate 264, in the backyard of a home, according to Indiana State Police.
LMPD Chief Paul Humphrey said Schepers shot at officers. Multiple Louisville Metro Police officers and U.S. Marshals deputies returned fire.
Schepers died at the scene.
No police officers or people in the area were injured in the shooting, according to police.
Humphrey said there is body-worn camera footage from the shooting that will be released within 10 business days.
Police said Saturday that Schepers shot Andry four times and left him lying in the roadway. According to Indiana State Police Master Trooper Philip Hensley, Andry underwent surgery Friday morning and the surgeon was “very pleased with the outcome.” He is currently in critical but stable condition.
