A Louisville man who died when he was hit by a car while hanging on the outside of a vehicle Thursday evening has been identified.
Officers were called to the area of South 4th Street and Winkler Avenue around 7 p.m. on a report that a person had been hit by a vehicle, according to Louisville Metro Police Spokesperson John Bradley.
The Louisville Fire Department also responded. Once on scene, officers found a man dead in the roadway.
He was identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office Saturday as 34-year-old Michael Orchard.
Police believe Orchard was hanging on the outside of a vehicle that was driving down South 4th Street near Winkler Avenue.
Police initially said the driver of the vehicle reportedly swerved into oncoming traffic intentionally, hitting another vehicle. That caused Orchard to collide with that vehicle, causing fatal injuries.
In an update Friday morning, police said that driver was not responsible for Orchard’s death.
Bradley said the driver of the vehicle Orchard was hanging out of fled on foot, but was later apprehended in the area of 7th Street and Algonquin Parkway and taken into custody.
LMPD’s Homicide Unit and Traffic Unit are investigating. There were no other reported injuries, according to Bradley.
