A man was arrested Thursday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash along Louisville Road that happened earlier this month.
According to a citation, 41 year-old Michael Mestas, of Rockfield, Kentucky, was arrested following a brief interview at Bowling Green Police Headquarters. He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failing to render aid or assist with death/serious physical injury.
The charges stem from a January 18 crash that claimed the life of 46-year-old Terry “TJ” Zweig, who was hit while biking along Louisville Road. His body was discovered in a grassy area beside the road, according to police.
On January 30, Bowling Green Police Department shared photos from surveillance footage captured at UV Liquors on social media, seeking help to identify the suspected individual. Police said the suspect traveled there after allegedly hitting Zweig.
Several tips were provided to police, identifying the suspect as Mestas. His truck was also identified with the tips.
Contact was made with Mestas via phone and he agreed to come to the police department to speak with detectives. Once at the station, Mestas was detained and agreed to speak with an officer.
Police said Mestas provided information on how the vehicle was damaged and did confirm that the vehicle identified in the photographs was his.
When further questioned about the incident, he asked to speak with an attorney. At that time, he was placed in police custody.
Mestas was lodged at the Warren County Regional Jail. He is being held under a $10,000 cash bond and scheduled to appear in court on February 5.
