A Louisville man has been charged with murder in connection to a deadly crash on National Turnpike in 2023.
Kendall Shaw, 41, was charged in connection to the crash that happened in the 5600 block of National Turnpike on October 10, 2023.
Louisville Police said only one car with two people inside was involved. During the investigation, witnesses told police the car was speeding on National Turnpike when the driver lost control.
The car went off the road and crashed into a railroad crossing pole, according to police.
Witnesses said the man driving got out of the car and ran. Officers found the woman who was inside the car on the ground, but she later died at the hospital.
The woman was later identified as 29-year-old Haley Hayes.
A newly unsealed indictment shows Shaw was charged Wednesday with several felonies in connection to the crash, including one charge of murder and one count of fleeing without rendering aid.
Police say the reason Shaw’s arrest was delayed for more than a year is because they had to wait on DNA results to come back, showing that Shaw’s DNA was found in the crashed vehicle.
LMPD Spokesperson Matt Sanders said Shaw was already serving an unrelated sentence when he was served the new charges Wednesday. Shaw was sentenced to over 29 years in federal prison in July for charges related to gun and drug trafficking.
Shaw was previously charged for setting fire to an apartment building in 2014 with three children still inside.
He is scheduled to be arraigned in Jefferson Circuit Court Monday.
