One person is dead after a house fire in Ohio County late Sunday night.
Ohio County Sheriff Deputies received a call around 11:15 p.m. and upon arrival they were told a person was still inside the house in the 100 block of Bishnor Road near Centertown.
Deputies say there is now a death investigation underway after the victim, 19-year-old Kaitlynn Newton was found in the burning house.
Sheriff Adam Wright says they are investigating the cause of the fire, but believe it may have started from a faulty outlet. However they are still looking at all avenues just to be on the safe side.
The sheriff says a man, who was inside the home, called 911. He told dispatchers about the fire and said he didn’t know where his girlfriend was.
Wright says the man left his cell phone inside the home while in a panic to get out. He had to run down the street to call 911.
The sheriff says they were able to get Newton’s body out of the home after about an hour, then worked to put the fire out, which was challenging because of the location and there was no nearby hydrants except for a couple blocks away.
Other departments involved include the Centertown Fire Department, Hartford Fire Department, and the Ohio County Coroners Office.
