An Owensboro man is in jail after he was accused of raping a minor.
A student was part of a program that taught the importance of speaking up, which lead to the student sharing the details of the abuse to get help.
Officials say 53-year-old Irene Nison Martinez Gomez was arrested on Thursday (05/01) at his apartment, just days after the initial report.
They say the abuse by Gomez had been going on for several years.
He has been charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual abuse, possession of a sex act by a minor and promoting a minor in a sex performance.
Gomez is lodged in the Daviess County Detention Center under a $100,000 cash bond and is scheduled to appear in court on May 7.
Owensboro Police Department said they are grateful for the school system who took a proactive role in protecting the child from further exploitation.
They say if you or someone you know is being abuse, reach out to local resources for help.
