A man accused of “bear-hugging” and “strangulating” a police officer is now facing an attempted murder charge among others, according to the Hopkinsville Police Department.
A Hopkinsville police officer made a traffic stop on a motorcycle on Monday (05/12) after it had reportedly passed a vehicle on the right shoulder of Old Clarksville Pike and Ft. Campbell Boulevard.
The stop occurred near mile marker 7 on the Pennyrile Parkway.
When the officer began speaking with the motorcycle rider, identified as 43 year-old Carlo Jones of Hopkinsville, Jones reportedly became argumentative and told the officer that he did not have to show his driver’s license.
Police said the officer then tried to detain Jones, but Jones pulled away before allegedly shoving the officer.
Jones allegedly ran at the officer and “bear-hugged” him, causing them to both fall over a guardrail, down an embankment near water.
Police said Jones mounted the officer and began strangulating the officer to the point of almost losing consciousness.
The officer was injured and taken to a hospital for treatment after the incident.
Jones was indicted by a Christian County Jury on Friday. A true bill was returned, charging Jones with first-degree attempted murder of a police officer, first-degree strangulation, third-degree assault of a police officer, resisting arrest, and menacing.
