The name of an inmate who died while in custody at Louisville Metro Corrections has been released and it appears no foul play was involved with his death.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified the inmate as 43 year-old Brandon T. McQuillen. The cause of McQuillen’s death was due to hanging. The manner of death has been ruled as suicide.
On the morning of May 20, 2025, fellow Louisville Metro Department of Corrections inmates alerted corrections officers that McQuillen was unconscious.
McQuillen received immediate medical help from Louisville Metro Department of Corrections staff before Louisville firefighters and Metro EMS crews arrived but was pronounced dead before he could be taken to a hospital for treatment.
McQuillen was being held on a murder charge after his father, 65 year-old John McQuillen, was found shot to death outside his home on March 12, 2025, in the 1200 block of Winter Springs Court.
McQuillen was taken into custody the next day on weapons charges after being found with an AR-15 rifle. He was charged with his father’s murder while in custody.
While Middletown and Louisville metro police investigated the murder, they found a suspicious package at the crime scene. The Louisville Metro Police Department bomb squad performed a controlled detonation of the package.
