A suspect is in custody after shots were reportedly fired into a vehicle driving on Interstate 64 in Louisville early Friday.
According to Louisville Metro Police Spokesman John Bradley, 8th Division officers were called just before 8 a.m. Friday on a trouble run for possible shots fired on eastbound I-64 near Hurstbourne Parkway.
When officers arrived, they found a person who said someone he didn’t know fired shots into his vehicle as he was driving on the interstate. The man wasn’t injured.
Police said 23 year-old Abdulmalik Ali has been initially charged with wanton endangerment, discharge of firearm, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, criminal mischief and assault.
According to court documents, the victim said an unknown vehicle hit his vehicle from behind and then he pulled over to look at the damage.
Ali then passed the victim and swerved all over the road. Court documents say the victim recorded the suspect’s vehicle to get a license plate. The victim said he heard what he believed to be four gun shots and felt the impact to the vehicle.
The suspect continued but the victim pulled over and reported the license plate to officers.
Officers then found the vehicle abandoned at the 11000 block of Bluegrass Parkway. Ali came up as the listed owned of the vehicle and officers found him nearby.
According to court records, Ali was previously convicted for a shooting in the same area. He was charged after a man was shot to death in a car in 2020 in the very same area, off I-64 and Hurstbourne.
In that case, Ali was charged with murder and attempted murder, but those charges were amended down to reckless homicide and wanton endangerment. He was sentenced to three years in prison.
He was scheduled to appear in court Saturday morning on the charges from Friday’s shooting.
