A Lexington man is accused of shooting at a Nicholasville police officer early Tuesday morning.
According to the Nicholasville Police Department, the officer attempted to stop a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on Lexington Road near Catnip Hill Road. The vehicle initially pulled over but then sped away.
The officer briefly followed the car to get the license plate number.
Police say the vehicle crossed into Fayette County, and the officer decided to end the pursuit. However, as he was turning back toward Nicholasville, the suspect’s vehicle performed a U-turn and drove back toward the officer.
As the vehicles passed each other, police say a man fired a gun through an open window, hitting the officer’s vehicle in the front driver’s side tire and disabling it. The officer was not injured.
The suspect drove off into Fayette County.
Lexington police used their resources, including Flock cameras, to locate and arrest the suspect.
The man, identified as 23 year-old Jonathan D. Rodriguez Lopez of Lexington, was questioned at the Nicholasville Police Department and is being held at the Jessamine County Detention Center without bond.
Rodriguez Lopez is facing charges of attempted murder of a first responder and fleeing or evading police.
