The Kentucky State Police Post 16 Henderson was requested by Henderson County Sheriff’s Office to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred June 9, just before 7:30 p.m. CT.
The preliminary investigation indicates Henderson County Sheriff’s Office was requested to respond to a disturbance in the 100 block of Eighth Street in Corydon, Kentucky where a male individual was threatening family members with a machete.
When deputies arrived, they encountered 64-year-old Charles Powell Jr. of Corydon. Powell refused to drop the machete and came at the responding deputy. During the interaction, the deputy discharged his agency-issued firearm, striking Powell, resulting in life-threatening injuries. The officer provided life-saving measures until EMS arrived; however, Powell succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital.
No officers were injured during the incident, and the investigation remains ongoing by the Kentucky State Police.
