A 21-year-old man allegedly crashed into two vehicles, including an unmarked Louisville police car, while trying to get away from a traffic stop in a stolen car earlier this week.
Around 1:30 p.m. on August 19, according to an arrest report, officers spotted a stolen 2024 Nissan Sentra on Dixie Highway and began following it. As they followed the Nissan, the drive, identified as 21-year-old Treyshaun Shelton, turned into a car dealership parking lot on the west side of Dixie Highway, just north of Upper Hunters Trace.
Police said Shelton then turned left out of the parking lot, traveling north in the southbound lanes of traffic. An officer in an unmarked vehicle turned on his emergency equipment to pursue Shelton, who refused to stop and took “evasive action.”
Traffic was heavy during the lunchtime rush on Dixie Highway, and “the reckless operation of the vehicle at this time created a significant danger to the public and all operators on the roadway” according to the arrest report.
Police said Shelton intentionally rammed an unmarked police vehicle, with an officer inside and also hit another passenger vehicle with two people in it as he continued northbound. He then abandoned the vehicle on Dixie Highway near Kingsford Drive before trying to get away on foot. Police said he tossed a semi-automatic gun under a vehicle as he was running before police caught up with him in the 1800 block of Kingsford Drive.
An LMPD K-9 unit helped officers find the gun under the vehicle.
Police said Shelton admitted he ran from police in the stolen car. He also said he knew he hit two vehicles during the pursuit. The collisions caused an estimated $1,000 worth of damage to the police car and passenger vehicle.
Shelton was arrested and now faces numerous charges, including:
Receiving stolen property
Two counts of wanton endangerment
Reckless driving
Fleeing or evading police
No operators license
Criminal mischief
Tampering with physical evidence
Shelton was booked into Louisville Metro Corrections, where he was held on a $100,000 cash bond. He pleaded not guilty to all charges during his arraignment hearing on August 20, and the judge kept his bond at $100,000.
Shelton’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 28.
