One person has been charged after a 12-year-old girl was killed in a crash on the Gene Snyder early Monday morning.
Reports initially indicated this was a single-vehicle crash but police now say two vehicles were involved. At approximately 2:30 a.m. Monday, officers responded to Gene Snyder Freeway at New Cut Road.
Investigators say two cars were traveling north when the Dodge Durango hit the back of a Jeep Compass. The Durango crashed into a wooded area and the Jeep Compass rolled on its top before coming to stop. The female driver was ejected into the median. A baby seat was found under the Jeep with a child strapped inside. Both the adult female and the baby were transported to University Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A 12-year-old child was also ejected from the jeep and pronounced dead on scene. Court documents confirm that the adult female is the mother of the two children.
The driver of the Durango, Renaldo James Gill, has been charged with DUI, murder, assault and failure to wear a seatbelt.
More charges could be coming.
The mother of the two children was also cited for not properly securing the two in the vehicle and wanton endangerment.
The road was closed for several hours.
