A review of the Kentucky Department of Medicaid Services exposes $800 million in wasted taxpayer money.
State Auditor Allison Ball did a special exam and reviewed payments made to managed care organizations (MCOs). Those act on behalf of the department to pay for Medicaid’s covered services similar to premiums for private insurance.
The exam found the Department of Medicaid Services failed to stop duplicate payments for recipients who moved out of Kentucky and enrolled in another state’s Medicaid program.
Ball said the lack of oversight led to $800 million worth of unnecessary payments to managed care organizations from 2019 to 2022.
This is the latest discovery in a series of Kentucky Medicaid issues uncovered by the state auditor.
