The Brandenburg City Council moved through several agenda items during through regular meeting Monday (10/13) evening.
At the beginning of the meeting, Council member Rhonda Allen recognized Jason and Beth Henderson as this month’s recipient of the Yard of The Month. The council heard and approved the second reading of a rezoning ordinance of .39 acres at 276 River Cliff Blvd from R-1 to R-3. The council set Halloween Trick of Treat hours within the city limits be held on Friday, October 31 from 5:30 until 8 PM.
Mayor David Pace informed the council of a review of policies related to the use of Riverfront Park is needed after a weekend of several conflicting events and heavy traffic from the past weekend. He said that the park needs to be used but city staff will work on details that can leads to better information related to events and functions held in the park. Pace also noted to the council, Jonathon Stull has been placed as Deputy Public Works Supervisor and Public Works Director T.J. Hughes is expected to return to his duties after a lengthy medical leave related to injuries he suffered last year in a work related traffic accident.
Council member David Woodward inquired about the total receipts so far on the newly passed occupational tax. City Clerk Amy Haynes said about seven companies have reported to the city to contribute just over $4,000. She said employers have until the end of October to report and provide payment for the first full quarter of the tax. Council member Donna Brown if a workshop could be scheduled in order to discuss how the occupational tax funds would be used. Mayor Pace said that the meeting could happen by the end of the calendar year but he wanted to wait until a couple of quarters of reporting was complete before beginning conversations on how to spend the funds.
The council discussed several needs including employee retention and improvements. Mayor David Pace said employee retention has been worked one but the city can only spend so much with it’s means and can’t compete with other surrounding towns that are larger and offer more wages or benefits. Mayor Pace updated the council on the Mooreman Road water tower project. He said that options are being reviewed and discussed to figure out how to payback a possible loan of around $600,000 to bridge the pricing between the award $1.2 million and the cost of the new water tower.
The council continued discussions with members of the local tenant union at Maple Grove Apartments. City leaders asked representative Kimberly Barr and other representatives basic information to assist with arranging a meeting between the tenant union and the ownership of The apartment complex to resolve maintenance issues as the city nor the county has a certified code enforcement officer to investigate allegations of neglected conditions of the apartment complex.
The council met during a short closed session near the end of the meeting to discuss possible litigation. The council returned with action taken during the closed session.
