Law enforcement agencies in more than one Central Kentucky community are investigating after white supremacist flyers were distributed overnight.
The Frankfort Police Department started receiving calls early Wednesday morning regarding propaganda for the Ku Klux Klan scattered throughout the city, focused mainly on downtown streets.
Frankfort Assistant Police Chief Scott Tracy said the flyers themselves are not considered a crime, but rather an expression of the First Amendment right. However, it is possible that the person responsible committed a different crime, such as littering or trespassing on private property.
Investigators are asking anyone with video cameras to review Tuesday night’s footage and contact the police department’s non-emergency line at 502-875-8582 with any information in order to help identify if a crime was carried out.
Residents in Versailles and Midway also discovered similar flyers on Wednesday morning.
Midway Mayor Grayson Vandegrift said the KKK propaganda was located throughout the city, including in the elementary school parking lot. He believes the flyers united his constituents.
The mayor said Midway police contacted the FBI regarding the distribution of the KKK flyers.
