A man convicted of killing a Louisville father and his daughter had his verdict overturned by the Kentucky Supreme Court on Thursday.
Kevon Lawless was arrested and charged with the murders of Brandon Waddles and his three-year-old daughter, Trinity Randolph, at their home on Kahlert Avenue back in August of 2020.
A jury found Lawless guilty of two counts of murder and first-degree burglary in September 2022.
During the trial, police said that Lawless used his girlfriend to set up Waddles to be robbed.
She, along with Evan Ross, who drove Lawless to Waddles’s home, agreed to testify against him for plea deals.
Ross was arrested after being found to have lied on the stand.
Lawless’ attorneys asked for a mistrial after the jury learned from media reports that Ross had been arrested for perjury.
One juror was replaced after telling the judge they could no longer be impartial. The jury went on to find Lawless guilty of the murders, and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
The Kentucky Supreme Court said in its decision that the trial court committed an error by denying Lawless’ motion for a mistrial, and vacated Lawless’ convictions and sent the case back to the Jefferson Circuit Court.
