A new high-tech initiative from the Louisville Metro Government is already seeing results.
Louisville Metro Police released video from one of the new machines that is part of the city’s Drone as First Responders program.
Louisville Metro Police Department says it caught two thieves on camera as they were stealing a $4,000 air conditioning unit in the Shawnee neighborhood.
The department says they were able to locate the suspects before officers arrived at the scene and determined where the suspects were going, so first responders could stop them from getting away.
Louisville Metro Police arrested 38-year-old Daniel Forbes and 43-year-old Destiny Walton in connection with the crime. Both suspects are being charged with criminal mischief, criminal trespassing, resisting arrest and theft by unlawful taking.
Walton is facing additional charges of possession of burglary tools, expired registration plates and operating on a suspended license.
Forbes and Walton are scheduled to appear in court for preliminary hearings in November.
The arrests were made possible through the new Drone as First Responders program.
Announced in June, the new initiative allows the city to deploy drones in emergency incidents to determine locations and assess the situation before civil servants arrive at the scene.
City officials estimate that they will be able to use the machines for an estimated 26,000 calls each year.
