It is officially flu season in Kentucky and Indiana, and doctors at Norton Healthcare are warning about a new strain of the flu virus.
It is already causing hospitalizations and severe illness in other countries.
In 2024, nearly 300 kids died in the United States from flu complications.
The majority of them were unvaccinated.
Doctors at Norton Healthcare said the mutate flu strain emerged overseas this summer.
“This motated strain has been circulating in the United Kingdom,” Dr. Kristina Bryant said. “And public health authorities there have released information that the vaccine is still effective in preventing severe outcomes. It’s keeping kids out of the emergency department, out of the hospital.”
Norton Healthcare experts said the current flu vaccine isn’t an exact match for the mutation, but they are urging people to still get the flu shot to avoid serious symptoms.
Most flu symptoms are manageable at home, but if you feel chest pain or shortness of breath, you should go to the hospital.
