Emergency crews located a car that was driven into the Ohio River in downtown Louisville on Saturday, but are still searching for the driver.
According to Louisville Metro Police, officers responded to a call around 7:30 p.m. of a water rescue in the Ohio River near the Great Lawn area of Waterfront Park on Saturday, November 29.
First responders were informed that a tugboat on the river saw a car drive off the waterfront near the Joe’s Crab Shack and into the river.
River traffic was temporarily stopped while Louisville Metro Police and Louisville Fire sent boats to search the area.
At around 9 p.m., crews successfully located the car, but did not find the driver.
Officials decided to come back to shore due to the swiftness of the currents and at the time, said they would return Sunday morning to remove the car and continue searching for the victim.
In an update Sunday morning, a spokesperson said the currents were still too swift to continue the recovery operations. Officials will continue to update conditions to make the determination of when it’s safe to conduct the recovery operations.
