The new natural gas pipeline in Bullitt County from the Louisville Gas and Electric Company (LG&E) will soon be operational.
LG&E said the additional path for natural gas to is supposed to support the area’s continued growth and economic development.
One of the last steps is to add the chemical that gives gas a recognizable smell, called mercaptan, which will be done in a safe and controlled manner, LG&E said.
Energy providers said adding this chemical helps others detect a potential natural gas leak.
LG&E said while the process will be done safely, they said it is still important to keep these steps in mind:
Leave the area immediately.
Call 911 and LG&E. To contact LG&E, call 502-589-1444 or 800-331-7370 and press 1-1-1.
Never report a gas leak by email.
Don’t assume others have reported the leak.
Bernheim Forest had a legal battle with LG&E for years on whether the power company could build a 12-mile pipeline to connect an existing line in eastern Bullitt County to another one near Interstate 65, just south of Shepherdsville, through the forest’s property. The legal battle ended December 2024 when a Kentucky Supreme Court denied to hear an appeals court ruling between them.
