A man is facing charges after a traffic stop turned into a short police pursuit in Nelson County.
According to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 1:40 a.m. Saturday following reports of a reckless driver on New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown.
Deputies say they located 28-year-old Juan Carlos Perez inside his vehicle and attempted a traffic stop near Houghlin Funeral Home. They say he was slow to respond but eventually stopped.
Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said their deputies had given orders for Perez to get out of the vehicle, but he took off and fled southbound on New Shepherdsville Road.
They said Perez continued to flee until he reached the intersection of East John Rowan Boulevard and Springfield Road, when he hit a snow embankment and his vehicle stopped.
Perez then allegedly fled on foot, jumping over a barbed wire fence. Deputies chased Perez, injuring their hands on the barbed wire but eventually took him into custody after a short struggle.
Nelson County Sheriff’s Office said Perez was “highly intoxicated” stating he ran because he is “already wanting to go back to Mexico.”
Some of the charges Perez received are speeding, driving under the influence, fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), fleeing or evading police (on foot), wanton endangerment and reckless driving.
Perez is currently lodged at the Nelson County Correctional Center and is being held on a $10,000 cash bond.
He is expected to appear in Nelson District Court on February 24.
